The Justin Germano era might have come to an end today. He was designated for assignment to make room for reliever
Mike Adams, whose contract was purchased from AAA. Adams, 29, was 3-1 with a 5.52 ERA in 12 games for Portland. In
his only full major league season, the right-hander was 2-3 with a 3.40 ERA in 46 games for the Milwaukee Brewers back
in 2004. The Padres will have 10 days to trade, release, or send Germano to the minors if he clears waivers.

With Josh Bard and Chris Young headed for the DL, the Padres called up catcher Colt Morton from San Antonio and pitcher
Josh Banks from Portland. Banks was 1-1 with a 6.66 ERA, although he has pitched much better since being moved to the
rotation recently. The right-hander has pitched six solid innings in each of his last two starts. Banks, 25, will likely assume
Young's spot in the rotation. Morton was called up when it was determined that Michael Barrett was not quite ready to
return from the DL.

Lastly, Portland closer Jared Wells has been called up to the majors for the first time in his career. The 26 year-old
right-hander is 1-1 with a 5.85 ERA. He is especially tough on right-handed batters, holding them to a .179 average this
season. Joe Thatcher has been sent back to AAA to make room.
