PADRE PROSPECT POWER RANKINGS - 2nd edition 2008 By Jason Martinez sdpadrefan.com 4/28/08 1. CHASE HEADLEY, LF (PORTLAND): The word is that he's doing fine in the outfield. The problem is that he's batting just .222 with one homer and 24 strikeouts. Regardless, Headley is probably just one good week away from being an everyday left fielder in the majors. (LAST EDITION RANK - 1) 2. MATT ANTONELLI, 2B (PORTLAND): While his batting average (.216) is nothing to write home about, Antonelli has an impressive walk-strikeout ratio (13 BB, 14 K), two triples, two homers, and two stolen bases. Unfortunately, he has struggled defensively with five errors in 18 games. Despite Tadahito Iguchi's struggles, it will be hard to promote Antonelli until he cuts down on his errors. (LAST EDITION RANK - 2) 3. WILL INMAN, RHP (SAN ANTONIO): The 21 year-old has given up zero earned runs in four of his five starts, while posting a 1.05 ERA. Here's an interesting stat. In three night starts, Inman is 3-0 with no runs allowed in 15.2 innings pitched, another sign that the ball is hard to pick up out of Inman's hand. He's on track to join the back end of the rotation by the end of 2009. (LAST EDITION RANK - 7) 4. MAT LATOS, RHP (FORT WAYNE): After striking out eight batters without walking a batter in his first start in Fort Wayne, it's pretty clear that this 20 year-old is on the fast track. Of the 11 right-handed batters faced in the four inning-outing, Latos struck out six of them. (LAST EDITION RANK - 4) 5. WADE LEBLANC, LHP (PORTLAND): The 23 year-old lefty has alternated great starts with terrible starts over his first four appearances. If he can become more consistent, he could become a permanent fixture in the Padres rotation by September. (LAST EDITION RANK - 3) 6. ERIC SOGARD, 2B (LAKE ELSINORE): Hands down, Sogard, 21, has been the best hitter in the organization in the early going. His ..422 BA, .527 OBP and 21 walks versus nine strikeouts are a sure sign that he is a special hitter. While the left-handed batter has yet to homer, he does have 13 doubles in only 24 games. Wow. (LAST EDITION RANK - NA) 7. CEDRIC HUNTER, CF (LAKE ELSINORE): Still not much power (0 HR, 4 2B) or speed (2 SB), but the 20 year-old is batting in the middle of the Lake Elsinore lineup and sporting a very impressive .319 BA and more walks (12) than strikeouts (11). (LAST EDITION RANK - 6) 8. MITCH CANHAM, C (LAKE ELSINORE): Canham has cooled off (.268 BA) after a hot start but his .391 OBP is a pretty good indicator that he knows what he's doing at the plate. There are still some questions as to whether he'll stay behind the plate. (LAST EDITION RANK - 5) 9. STEVE GARRISON, LHP (SAN ANTONIO): A seven-inning no-hitter, followed by five shutout innings in his next outing has catapulted Steve Garrison onto the prospect radar. Opponents are hitting just .153 off of the 22 year-old left-hander. (LAST EDITION RANK - NA) 10. CHAD HUFFMAN, LF (SAN ANTONIO): Huffman was struggling badly before a recent 10-for-19 tear with 2 homers boosted his average to .299. Apparently, the 22 year-old likes to play in the daytime. He is batting .619 (13-for-21) during the day and .197 at night. (LAST EDITION RANK - 9) |
