ORGANIZATIONAL DEPTH CHART

updated 9/12/08
by Jason Martinez

LHP - Starters
SD: Shawn Estes, Wade LeBlanc
AAA: Cesar Ramos
AA: Steve Garrison (DL)
Hi A: Nate Culp
Lo A: Matt Teague, Cory Luebke
SS: Geoff Vandel
AZL: Jose De Paula, Euclides Viloria
DSL: Pedro Hernandez, Pedro Martinez

7/13 UPDATE:
Overview: There's a good chance Randy Wolf is traded in the next few weeks, which will open up a need for a lefty in the
rotation.
Positives: Garrison, 21, has established himself as a top prospect on the fast track to the big leagues in his first full-season with the
organization. Culp hasfollowed up a 13-win season in '07 to have a respectable 3.88 ERA and eight wins in his first full season in the Cal
League. Hernandez is a 19 year-old Venezuelan that has walked just two batters and struck out 38 in 31.1 innings pitched. Martinez is a 6'3"
17 year-old out of the Dominican that can already throw in the low 90's. DePaula, 18, is also an intriguing prospect out of the D.R. He has 2
walks and 18 strikeouts thus far, although his ERA is high (5.27 ERA) through his first four starts.
Negatives: LeBlanc has had exteme ups
and downs in his first AAA season and Ramos' first season at Portland (6.52 ERA) has not been kind to him. Luebke, a first rounder in '07,
appeared to be on the fast track after a nice debut but he struggled badly in Lake Elsinore (6.84 ERA) and was recently demoted to the
bullpen, then down to Fort Wayne.

RHP - Starters
SD: Jake Peavy, Chris Young, Cha Seung Baek, Josh Geer
AAA: Justin Germano, Enrique Gonzalez, Josh Banks
AA: Will Inman, Matt Buschmann, Stephen Faris, Manny Ayala, Ernesto Frieri
Hi A: Cesar Carrillo, Drew Miller, Rolando Valdez
Lo A: Matthew Latos, Jeremy McBryde, Jeremy Hefner, Wynn Pelzer, Corey Kluber
SS: Simon Castro, Tyson Bagley, Pablo Menchaca, Tom Davis
AZL: Junior Veras, Al Angelucci, Stiven Osuna, Chris Wilkes
DSL: Stalyn Valdez, Juan Chavez, Juan Rosario, Luis De La Cruz, Juan Herrera, Erick Ojeda

7/13 UPDATE:
Overview: Still the strength of the organization, with Peavy and Young. Positives: Josh Banks is establishing himself as a
very good back-of-the-rotation starter in the big leagues. Inman continues to take steps forward and Stephen Faris (3.30 ERA) has also been
dealing down in San Antonio. Cesar Carrillo (9.35 ERA in 17.1 IP) has been crushed in Lake Elsinore since returning but at least he's pitching.
Hefner (3.50 ERA, 98 K's in 90 IP) and Pelzer (3.39 ERA) have been impressive for the Wizards.
Negatives: Top pitching prospect Latos has
been injured for most of the season. Miller, another highly touted prospect, continues to be inconsistent (5.56 ERA in Lake Elsinore).

LHP - Relievers
SD: Justin Hampson
AAA: Joe Thatcher, Sean Henn (DL)
AA: Phillip Barzilla
Hi A: Brooks Dunn
Lo A: Colt Hynes, Allen Harrington (DL)
SS: Rob Musgrave, Zachary Herr
AZL: Stephen Boyd, Matt Means, Pascual Juan, Andrew Albers
DSL: Juan Oramas, Esteban Javier

7/13 UPDATE:
Overview: Not much help on the horizon. Positives: Henn and Ledezma throws really, really hard. Sorry, that's all I could
come up with.
Negatives: Hampson and Thatcher were supposed to be fixtures in the San Diego bullpen after strong rookie seasons, but both
struggled to get batters out with the big club. After brilliant seasons in 2007, Dunn (7.53 ERA in LE) and Hynes(6.95 ERA in FW) have taken
steps backward.

RHP - Relievers
SD: Trevor Hoffman, Heath Bell, Mike Adams, Clay Hensley, Cla Meredith, Chad Reineke (DL), Dirk Hayhurst, Mike Ekstrom, Charlie Haeger,
Scott Patterson
AAA: Carlos Guevara (DL), Edwin Moreno, Adam Bass, Kevin Cameron (DL), Bryan Corey
AA: Mauro Zarate, Gabe DeHoyos, Greg Burke, Neil Jamison, Michael DeMark, Jonathan Ellis,
Hi A: Wilton Lopez, John Madden, RJ Rodriguez, Brandon Gomes, Richie Daigle, Derek McDaid, Robert Woodard, Evan Scribner
Lo A: Jackson Quezada, Bryan Oland, Dylan Axelrod, Omar Gutierrez, Aaron Breit
SS: Alexis Lara, Anthony Bass, Erik Davis, Nick Vincent, Cooper Brannan, Kyle Heyne, Nick Schumacher, Gary Poynter, Tyler Davis
AZL: Colin Lynch, Josh Davies, Brad Brach, Steve Goins, Eric Gonzalez, Mauricio Tabachnik
DSL: Deiber Sanchez, Javier Diaz, Guillermo Rodriguez, Harlen Mozo

7/13 UPDATE:
Overview: Bell is still one of the best relievers in baseball, but the bullpen has been a major disappointment this season and
only Mike Adams has taken advantage of his opportunity in the big leagues.
Positives: Bell and Adams should form a pretty good late-inning
duo next season. DeHoyos, Burke, and Ellis have all done well in San Antonio and could get a look next spring. There are some good young
arms in the low minors, but we won't know for another year or two if any will separate themselves from the pack.
Negatives: Rule V pickup
Guevara wasn't ready for the majors. Kevin Cameron was supposed to be an important piece to the puzzle in San Diego but he's battled
injuries all season. Lopez and Frieri, who were each added to the 40-man roster in the off-season, haven't taken a step forward.

Catcher
SD: Josh Bard, Michael Barrett (DL), Nick Hundley, Luke Carlin
AAA: Shawn Wooten, JD Closser
AA: Jose Lobaton, Colt Morton
Hi A: Mitch Canham, Barry Gunther
Lo A: Luis Martinez, Ali Solis, Adam Zornes
SS: Emmanuel Quiles, Logan Gelbrich, Clinton Naylor
AZL: Robert Lara, Wary Polanco
DSL: Jhonaldo Pozo, Hans Wilson, Maykor Rojas

7/13 UPDATE:
Overview: If Bard can come back healthy for the second half of the season, the Padres will be better and he could claim the
starting job once again for next season. However, Hundley will get a long look this season, but there's not much else in the system besides
Mitch Canham, who's still 2 years away.
Positives: Hundley's combination of power and defense give him a chance to compete for a starting
spot in '09. Canham is an on-base machine (.404 OBP in LE). 2008 draftee Robert Lara is off to an impressive start in the AZL (.492 OBP in
14 games).
Negatives: Martinez has struggled to hit his weight at Fort Wayne, Morton hasn't hit much, and the youngsters Quiles and Solis
are still many years away from making any sort of impact.

First Base
SD: Adrian Gonzalez
AAA: Justin Huber, Vince Sinisi, Brian Myrow
AA: Kyle Blanks, Craig Cooper
Hi A: Jeremy Hunt, Robbie Blauer, Keoni Ruth, Allan Dykstra,
Lo A: Felix Carrasco, Zachary Brown
SS: Matt Clark,
Edgar Garzon
AZL: Chris Hardin
DSL: Manuel Nuno

7/13 UPDATE:
Overview: The Padres are set at first base for years with the All-Star Gonzalez in the big leagues and Blanks next in line, if
the Padres fail to re-sign Gonzalez after his contract expires in a few seasons. And the depth would only get better if they can sign first round
pick Allan Dykstra.
Positives: Gonzalez, obviously, is the biggest positive in the entire organization. Blanks, still just 21 years old, continues
to hit at every level (.327 BA, 10 HR, 57 RBI in AA) and Myrow was finally called up to the big leagues after destroying AAA pitching for two
years in a row. Carrasco's power (13 HR's in FW) is definitely a positive ...
Negatives: ... but his strikeouts (114 in 266 AB's) are downright
ridiculous. If Dykstra does not sign, it would be a major disappointment.

Second Base
SD: Matt Antonelli, Edgar Gonzalez
AAA: Brett Dowdy, Craig Stansberry
AA: Gabriel Lopez
Hi A: Eric Sogard
Lo A: Andrew Parrino, Anthony Contreras
SS: Joey Railey
AZL: Kevin Hansen, Kevin Acosta
DSL: Jorge Minyeti, Eduardo Lopez

7/13 UPDATE:
Overview: The emergence of Edgar Gonzalez has given the team some stability for 2009 as Antonelli has taken a huge step
backwards.
Positives: Eric Sogard is having a huge season (.312 BA, 26 doubles, 55 walks) at LakeElsinore. Negatives: Antonelli is still
struggling to reach the Mendoza line and hasn't been stealing bases (3 SB) or hitting for power (3 HR) like he did in '07. Parrino is batting just
.243 at Fort Wayne.

Shortstop
SD: Khalil Greene (DL), Luis Rodriguez, Sean Kazmar
AAA: Craig Stansberry
AA: Jesus Lopez
Hi A: Jodam Rivera
Lo A: Drew Cumberland (DL), Lance Zawadski
SS: Jeudy Valdez, Dean Anna, Cole Figueroa, Beamer Weems
AZL: Keisy Marte, Bill Shaughnessy
DSL: Jonathan Galvez, Daniel Garce

7/13 UPDATE:
Overview: The Padres still have Greene under contract for another season, but he has struggled more than at any time in his
career.
Positives: Kazmar hit .356 in the month of June, a good sign, considering he's struggled to hit .200 in every other month he's played
in AA. Cumberland has shown flashes of potential (.286 BA, 16 SB) but continues to be plagued by errors (17 errors in 43 games at SS) and
injuries. Galvez, a potential five-tool player, is off to a .313 start with 3 HR's in the DSL. He's only 17.
Negatives: Greene could leave as a free
agent after next season, but there is no one in the system that has the potential to be an everyday starter for at least another 3-4 years.

Third Base
SD: Kevin Kouzmanoff
AAA: M. McDougall (DL), Tom King
AA: Seth Johnston, Brian Snyder
Hi A: Brian Joynt
Lo A: Justin Baum
SS: James Darnell, Derek Shunk, Angel Mercado
AZL: Edinson Rincon, Matthew Gaski, Logan Forsythe,
DSL: Jose Paulino

7/13 UPDATE:
Overview: Kouzmanoff is a good player, but he might not have as much of a celing as many had thought. Positives: The
Padres have two very capable third baseman already playing at the big league level, with Kouz and Headley. Contreras, Joynt, and Baum are
all having nice seasons, and 2008 1st round pick Forsythe has potential.
Negatives: Forsythe's season-ending injury was a setback. The lack
of depth in AAA or AA are definitely reasons why the Padres might be reluctant to move Kouzmanoff for some help in other areas.

Left Field
SD: Chase Headley, Scott Hairston (DL), Will Venable
AAA: Paul McAnulty, Justin Huber, Peter Ciofrone
AA: Chad Huffman
Hi A: Brian Joynt
Lo A: Robert Perry, Yefri Carvajal
SS: Bobby Verbick
AZL: Jaff Decker, Aaron Murphree
DSL: Miguel Tiburcio, Cesar Sosa

7/13 UPDATE:
Overview: Headley is the left fielder of the present and future unless Kouzmanoff is traded. Positives: Headley has had no
major issues defensively in left field and has been impressive at the plate with 5 HR's in his first 23 games. Huffman's first season in San
Antonio hasn't been as impressive as Headley's 2007 season in AA but he's still been able to post a .396 OBP. Nineteen year-old Carvajal has
tons of potential and is holding his own in Fort Wayne (.278 BA, 18 doubles) and first round pick Jaff Decker has been very impressive in the
AZL, posting a .390 BA in his first 12 games as a pro.
Negatives: The platoon of Hairston and P-MAC failed to produce in San Diego,
although Hairston has been the team's best hitter in July.

Center Field
SD: Jody Gerut, Scott Hairston (DL), Will Venable, Drew Macias
AAA: Javis Diaz
AA: Josh Alley
Hi A: Cedric Hunter, Luis Durango
Lo A: Robert Perry, Bradley Chalk
SS: Dan Robertson, Blake Tekotte
AZL: Jason Codiroli
DSL: Rymer Liriano, Rosario Carrillo

7/13 UPDATE:
Overview: Gerut and Hairston are currently sharing the position. Both have brought a lot to the table offensively and
defensively. Things could be a lot worse. Venable and Hunter, who both had question marks coming into the season, are both handling the
position very well.
Positives: Despite injuires earlier in the season, Venable is putting up big numbers (.319-9-49) in Portland. Macias is having
his best season as a pro in San Antonio and Hunter has been a singles machine down at Lake Elsinore. There is also plenty of depth in the
low minors (college draftees: Chalk, Roberston, Tekoote, Codiroli) and another highly-touted 17 year-old, Liriano, playing in the DSL.
Negatives: CF is still a question mark for 2009.

Right Field
SD: Brian Giles, Jody Gerut, Chip Ambres
AAA: Vince Sinisi
AA: Craig Cooper, Michael Baxter
Hi A: Kellen Kulbacki, Sam Carter
Lo A: Danny Payne, Ryan Hill, Sawyer Carroll
SS: Shane Buschini
AZL: Chase Williams, Tim Atherton
DSL: Carlos Garcia

7/13 UPDATE:
Overview: Giles could still be traded, but with no sure-fire candidate to replace him, it is likely that his option will be picked up
for 2009.
Positives: Giles has bounced back and is having a great season. Gerut and Ambres are capable back-ups and Kellen Kulbacki
(.308-13-40 at LE) is emerging as one of the organization's top hitting prospects. 2008 draftee Sawyer Carroll is raking in the AZL (.311-3-16 in
19 games)
Negatives: Even though Giles could still post a .400 OBP next season at age 38, the Padres will likely end up paying $9 million
dollars to him next season because there are no replacements ready in the high minors.
